Three prisoners attacked a Rimutaka prison guard before another guard jumped into help.
The attack happened on Tuesday at the Upper Hutt prison.
The Corrections Department has refused to reveal much information about the attack while police investigate but Rimutaka Prison deputy director Viv Whelan said the attack initially involved three prisoners on a single staff member.
“The staff member was taken to hospital for medical treatment, along with another Corrections officer who was injured while assisting. Both staff members returned home later in the evening.”

Staff safety was a top priority for Corrections, which had a “zero tolerance” approach for violence.
“Police have been informed and are investigating the incident. While this investigation is under way we cannot go into any further detail about this incident.”
Corrections were asked, but refused to answer, whether weapons were involved, whether the attackers had been charged, and what injuries the guards received.
Police are yet to respond to a request for comment.
