Thieves on a ute ram-raided the Four Square store in the small Hawke’s Bay town of Takapau, ripped a tobacco cabinet from its wall and drove off with it last night.
Owner of the store Harry Singh said the ute smashed through the store’s front windows at about 11.20pm. He was not present at the time but has been told there were three or four people in the ute, which then sped away.
“The whole thing took three minutes. They knew what they were doing,” he said.
“We rushed to the shop. Police were here very quickly. We heard there was a big chase and they may have caught one of the guys,” Singh said.
“I re-stocked the cigarette cabinet last night so it had a lot of cigarettes and tobacco in it,” he said.
He said police had recovered some stock but the vast majority of it and the cabinet was still missing.
Singh said the shop was a mess with glass covering the floor. One checkout til had been damaged and may not be working and he was unsure if the shop would open today.
Police have been contacted for comment.
