The factory that made L&P fizz is on the market

The old L&P bottling plant in Paeroa is for sale.

The Station Road property was first used as a bottling plant in 1926.

It was refurbished and expanded over the years before it was closed in 1980 and production moved to Auckland.

The land and buildings are now a second hand shop and have a rateable value of $180,000.

Initially named Lemon & Paeroa, the soft drink was created in 1907 by combining carbonated mineral water of Paeroa with lemon juice.

L&P is now owned and made by Coca-Cola.

In 1904, Arthur Wohlman, a government balneologist (an expert on medicinal springs), found Paeroa mineral water had a high concentration of magnesium bicarbonate, which gave the water its distinct taste.

The first bottling plant for the drink was established in late 1908 on the site of the big L&P bottle in the town, before production was moved to Station Rd.

The freehold land and high-stud building would be auctioned on May 18 by Bayleys Waikato.

The building is constructed from block and corrugated iron. The flooring is primarily concrete on the ground level and wood on the mezzanine

Bayleys salesman Josh Smith said the property was zoned commercial.

The building’s mezzanine level has several offices and an unconsented self-contained flat on the upper storey with a kitchenette, shower, living area and toilet, Smith said.

The gated yard to the side of the building would suit a large retail business – such as a home building or landscaping store, he said.
