A teenager who killed his two-year-old step-son has been jailed for seven and a half years.
Tamehana Huata, 19, was in February found guilty of the manslaughter of two-year-old Matiu Wereta.
A High Court jury also found him guilty of injuring the child with intent to injure.
The toddler, known as MJ, was found covered in bruises and cuts after an ambulance was called to his Flaxmere, Hastings, home in October, 2015.

Huata had been in a relationship with the toddler’s mother for several months before the attack.
At a sentencing hearing on Tuesday morning, Justice Susan Thomas said the toddler was “particularly defenceless and vulnerable” and Huata’s actions amounted to “a significant breach of trust”.
