Powerlines were brought down after a train hit a stolen car that was abandoned on the tracks.
Police said the train struck the car on the tracks at Maewa Rd, Feilding, just south of Managhs Rd, at 5.55am on Friday. A spokeswoman said it appeared the car was stolen and dumped on the tracks overnight before being hit by a passing freight train.
There were no reports of injuries.
Train powerlines were brought down by the crash.
Emergency services were working with rail staff to ensure the site was safe before moving the vehicle off the tracks.
Police are investigating the incident, she said.
