Sportsman in court for indecent acts in Blockhouse Bay

An Auckland sportsman has appeared in court accused of committing multiple indecent acts in Blockhouse Bay.

The charges relate to four incidents in the west Auckland suburb in late March and early April, three of which took place on the same street.

The 23-year-old was arrested last Thursday as a result of a police investigation.

He has been granted interim name suppression.

Police have charged him with four counts of committing an indecent act in a public place – if convicted, he could face up to two years in prison.

“We know that there has been concern amongst the Blockhouse Bay community, about a man seen performing indecent acts in his car, in view of members of the public,” said detective senior sergeant Marcia Murray.

“We hope that this arrest will bring some reassurance to the community.”

Police do not believe the man arrested was responsible for other similar offences that were reported in Blockhouse Bay recently.

Young girls were approached by a male in Blockhouse Bay and Hillsborough on 24 March and 28 March, who then indecently exposed himself to them.

The offender was described as being Caucasian with tanned skin, aged in his late 20s to early 30s.

Two weeks later, on 10 April, a man offered a nine-year-old girl $100 to get into his car on Bolton Street in Blockhouse Bay.

She declined his offer and ran to her school, where adults called police.

He was described as Caucasian in his mid-30s with short blonde-brown curly hair.

The 23-year-old sportsman in court does not match those physical descriptions.

He will appear again at the Auckland District Court on 9 May.
