Police say it’s only “sheer luck” nobody was hurt after a tussle between rival gang members in Rotorua ended in shots being fired near a bustling market.
Many calls were made to emergency services reporting the gunshots, after the gang fight near a children’s playground at the Kuirau Park markets near Rotorua’s CBD on Saturday.
The area was teeming with shoppers at the time.
A short time later, police found a vehicle which appeared to have been shot at.
Officers examining the scene confirmed a gun had been fired.
That afternoon armed police searching a Rotorua property arrested a man.
The 27-year-old man would appear in the Rotorua District Court on Monday facing firearms and disorder charges.
It was not clear if a weapon was recovered.
Detective Senior Sergeant John Wilson of Bay of Plenty police said they were taking the matter very seriously and an investigation was underway.
Wilson called on witnesses to come forward, especially people who had filmed the incident on their cellphones.
“It is only through sheer luck that no one was hurt, and police are determined to identify all those involved and hold them to account for their actions.”
Witnesses could call police on 07 348 0099, or anonymously give information via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
