Emergency services were called to the remote scene near the Poerua River at 2.36pm, police acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Lyes said.
Access was difficult and emergency services used jetboats to reach the scene.
Worksafe has been notified. The coroner would determine the cause of death, Lyes said.
“Police extend their sympathies to Mr Hayward’s family and friends at this difficult time,” he said.
