Man uses tomahawk axe to rob a Nelson dairy

A man is on the run from police in Nelson after robbing a dairy with a tomahawk axe.

Shortly before 5pm on Wednesday the man entered the Tahuna On the Spot dairy in Muritai St carrying the weapon.   He smashed a glass display panel with the tomahawk, and stole cash and cigarettes while the dairy owner locked himself away in the rear of the store – he was not injured.

The axe-wielding man was described as aged 25-30 years, of solid build, and wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt bearing distinctive designs on the chest with dark track pants.   “Someone will recognise this person,” said Detective Dean Schroder.   “If you recognise the man, or have information which might help us identify him, please call Nelson Police on (03) 546 3840.”

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
