Police arrested three people after a brief car chase in Dunedin on Thursday afternoon was halted by mechanical failure.
The pursuit began just after 3pm when police spotted a person of interest in a car on the southern motorway.
Police attempted to signal the car down but the vehicle instead sped off, prompting police into a chase.
They believed the car’s passengers threw several items from the car during the chase.
The chase did not last long, as the fleeing vehicle slowed due to a mechanical failure.
Police closed both lanes of the southern motorway while they looked for the items. A diversion was in place through Stevenson Road.
The three people who were in the car were in police custody on Thursday evening.
