Destination Marlborough appoints new general manager

Destination Marlborough has named its new general manager following months of searching for a replacement.

The region’s tourism body announced Jacqui Lloyd as the new general manager on Monday, to replace outgoing manager Tracy Johnston.

The group has been on the hunt for a replacement since Johnston announced her resignation after eight years in the top job in January.

Destination Marlborough board chairman Nigel Gould said an extensive range of candidates applied, and the trust worked the applicants down into a shortlist of 10.

“It was very impressive to see the scope of responses, with both national and international applicants,” he said.

“This reaffirmed the respect that Marlborough has achieved as a region not only in gaining great momentum, but one which is well recognised for the further potential that exists.”

It was Lloyd’s in-depth knowledge of international visitor markets, travel distribution channels and business event attraction which won the trust over, Gould said.

Lloyd had previously held senior roles within Tourism New Zealand, Tourism Auckland, Tourism Holdings Limited and, most recently, at the Adelaide Convention Bureau.

“Her level of experience, contacts and familiarity is very relevant,” Gould said.

“She has thorough experience in the New Zealand tourism sector.”

Lloyd would continue to grow the visitor economy of Marlborough, which was worth $1 million a day, Gould said.

The incoming general manager was no stranger to Marlborough, with family ties to the region.

She was scheduled to begin at Destination Marlborough on June 6 with Johnston to stay on as the general manager until the end of May.

Destination Marlborough was a not-for-profit trust established by the Marlborough District Council to market Marlborough as a visitor destination.

The organisation also operated the Picton, Blenheim and Havelock i-Site Visitor Information Centres and Business Events Marlborough.
