Coffee burnt in factory fire in Dunedin

Smoke from a fire burning in a coffee roasting machine has engulfed the Cerebos Gregg’s factory in Dunedin.

A Fire Service spokesman said they were made aware of the fire at 4.50am on Monday, after a member of the public saw heavy black smoke billowing out of the building.

Smoke had consumed the third and fourth levels of the Forth St factory, he said.

Seven crews had responded to the fire, but three were soon sent home as the fire was quickly contained.

Four crews remained on site mid-morning, attending to the smoke-damaged factory.

Otago Polytechnic student Madeline Witchall said she saw flames on the roof of the building before fire crews reached it and the fire turned to thick smoke.

The fire had only burnt briefly, she said.
