A stolen ute was used to drive into the front of a BP in an attempt to steal a large quantity of cigarettes.
Police were called to the BP station on Kimbolton Rd in Feilding at 1:40am on Sunday after the ram-raid occurred.
A spokeswoman said police pursued the vehicle once it had left the BP, but the offenders abandoned the ute and fled on foot.
They have not been located.
There were no staff on duty at the time of the incident.
Police were carrying out a forensic examination on Sunday morning and were appealing to anyone who had any information to contact them on 06 351 3600.
